I, for one, loved the gameplay in ME2 compared to ME1, and didn't care that they dropped many of the RPG aspects (and I'm generally an RPG fan!)

The main plot in ME2 was a little less well done compared to ME1, but it's made up for the fact that the characterization is excellent! It's rare to find a video game that does such great character development... most are just action porn. (Save the world/Kill Hitler)

All your ranting about the game on this website convinced me to get the original a few months ago... thanks for alerting me to this awesome game(s) that I would have otherwise missed.

Video games live show is sounding good and also idea of bringing that music to public is also good, looks like having a lot of fun there.

  • Video Games Live   14 years 3 weeks ago

This sounds like he was at the show I went to, as some of the exact things happened there. To be fair, the cosplayers who were Link from Twilight Princess and Mario from Mario 64 were kids probably 10 years old. It would be hard to expect them to know anything else. I was surprised the boy didn't say Mario from Mario Galaxy. Anyway, just thought I'd mention that.

I read this great comment on Kotaku the other day about Video Games Live, though I'd pass it on:

WARNING: A long rant RAMBLING POINTLESS is approaching fast!

I think I hate gamers based on my Video Games Live experience. It was brewing for a while thanks to the Internet, but this was the tipping point. Maybe "hate" is too strong of a word or not the best one. "Elitist" works but fails to imply the level of disdain. I can't help but feel as though I was a lone Beatles fan in a room full of Jonas Brothers worshippers.

Don't get me wrong as it was an awesome show and more diverse than I expected going in, but I think I'm too much of a snob to tolerate all the squealing for Square/Nintendo stuff. I so wanted to hear some Spencer Nilsen Ecco/Batman Returns, some Monkey Island, TechnoSoft, Darius Gaiden with that choir, and others instead of the same songs/composers in triplicate.

Likewise, it didn't help that people cheered at the new games and were clueless when older titles or anything not on a Nintendo platform came into play. Even the cosplayers would say something like, "I'm Link... from Twilight Princess." "I'm Mario... from Mario 64." That bugged me. Civilization? Nothing. Myst. Nothing. Final Fantasy VII? OMG ROOF BLOWN JFAKJFKAJFA%*@%# It's no wonder the 16-bit montage featuring numerous Genesis hits such as Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2, and others drew blank stares unless Mario or Donkey Kong was walking about. The opener with Tempest and other classics was lost on them as well.

I'm starting to believe that older games and those which have not branded themselves over and over again on the minds of children are going to be forgotten with time, and, sadly, probably sooner than you think. Pong is our Birth of a Nation, only known for what it is. All other titles of that period are quickly forgotten as with so many other silent films from that era. I could have people asked anyone in that crowd what Demons to Diamonds is, and I have a feeling no one would know.

That does make me sad, but it's to be expected I suppose. For all of my American Roots listening, I really don't know much about music pre-60's. I know a few older films but hardly any. The problem is my ignorant dollars are just as vital to those industries as the more knowledgeable person's, and sales don't give a damn about quality, innovation, or creativity but simply what moves units. Nostalgia trumps innovation every time. Part of me says that and feels like a hypocrite given how much I'm excited for Sonic 4 and the new Hydro Thunder, but in my defense I do try loads of new titles and don't have the tunnel vision so many seem to have.

This is not as cohesive a post as I'd like and would probably fall apart under review. I just felt like rambling and ranting a bit because I can't help but feel quite removed from the crowd which attended the show. I want to peg that on people being ignorant, and while I think that is part of it, it's probably because I'm just a video game snob.

  • Video Games Live   14 years 3 weeks ago

Yes, they had the Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy Music, but as I said in the post they included music from the game Advent Rising which didn't sell that well, as well as music from Chrono Trigger, the God of War series, the Halo series, the Castevania series, the Sonic series, the Myst series, the MegaMan series, Civilization IV, a medley from old arcade games, and others I can't remember offhand.

Sounds pretty fun. And while Tommy seems pretty annoying on G4, he's really one of the few strong composers with a good technical background who can make different varieties of music (along with say, Richard Jacques). And he's done a ton for the music within the industry, as is quite evident here. Just because a game isn't popular or didn't sell well doesn't mean its music isn't technically sound or good enough to be played at something like this. I'd personally be really disappointed if I went to something like this and it was all a Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy nostalgia trip but I guess that's also all some people would want.

NOTE: IF I'm missing a few A's, it's because my A key is broken.

The game gets AMAZING after you get through Vault 15. You get a shitload of weapons and ammo if you can find them, and you can get some big XP. When you get really far into the game, it get's a little repetitive, as you can't go 2 squares without running into a random encounter.

    huh......

  • Glory of Heracles   14 years 4 weeks ago

    I think I would've stopped after minutes 5 and 6 lol.

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

Yeah, it's hard alright. It's easier on the second play through, actually, but the first will kill you. :p I was able to beat it in the end, but only by cheating since I wasn't able to beat the second to final boss with the stupid Bracelet and after seven straight hours of trying to beat that boss, I finally gave up and used the level select code to fight the final boss directly. It's not a proud moment, but damn it, at least I finished it. The previous two games weren't anywhere NEAR as hard as this one, though. Beat those fair and square.

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

Shimmying is the worst thing ever.

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

Double jump should be a requirement of every single video game.

    And no shimmying either.

  • Bioshock   14 years 4 weeks ago

    and...

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

lol. Good first hour. And reminds me that I have to play through Maximo again (well, restart it at this point). And did you really spend 3 minutes figuring out to double jump? >_>

  • Bioshock   14 years 4 weeks ago

Bioshock is the best game ever and try out the new sequel

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

Yeah, this game was really painful for me. I beat it with "assistance", long story but it was a challenge I set for myself.

  • Lux-Pain   14 years 4 weeks ago

I absolutely love Lux-pain, it is my favourite game, I liked the way it was more a book than an action game, so I think that manga readers will love it!

  • Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts   14 years 4 weeks ago

This game was probably the first game ever to cause me to wring my SNES controller in pure frustration. I both love it and am leery of it, and there's a couple fond memories attached to it, but that's all they'll ever be--memories. I'm never going back!

Though years later I did try Maximo out, which is sort of a spiritual successor to Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Difficulty trumps fun in that one, too.

  • Super Mario Galaxy   14 years 5 weeks ago

Nice review! We recently covered Super Mario Galaxy on 101 Video Games:

I think we pretty much said the same thing as you - the sheer imagination of the game is mind-blowing. Can't wait for the sequel - like you said, might be the first Wii game I've bought at release for quite a while.

  • Homeworld   14 years 5 weeks ago

The story really is amazing - and amazingly told
A shame you didn't get into that.

When I play games like this one, which are obviously set in a much more complex universe than the games themselves can really cover, I often read up on a bit of game lore as I go along (like, if you are totally into the starwars movies, you read up on the starwars universe's lore).

Talking motivation for leaving their home, as far as I remember, the planet is not really that hospitable (drying out of resources even?)
And of course, think Earth. What would WE do with a discovery like that!?

  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee   14 years 5 weeks ago

I also remember playing games with my dad and brother and having 10 times more fun than I would have playing alone. It definitely has a unique quality to it, and I kind of wish I had played it back in the day, I think I would have enjoyed it more.

  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee   14 years 5 weeks ago

When I play odd world for the first time, I was with my dad. Me and my dad have always had a very strong rivalry as far as games, like Mario cart was a big one, For example if my dad was in 2nd and I was in 8th I would blow my dad to pieces at my own expense just so he didn't win. He like wise, so when we played odd world, seeing each other get blown to kingdom come, shot eaten alive shot again and grind-ed to a pulp it was funny. But that's just my opinion It is still my favorite game over all PS2 or 3 games simply because its so original. It kind of has the same quality as metal gear solid did in the sense you felt more attached to the character, you were not in any way immortal and found your self running for your life more than killing bad guys.

  • Fallout 3   14 years 5 weeks ago

I love this game - I spend way too much on this game I constantly go back to it

Anyway, when fighting outside of vats, you really have to take your time and use the left trigger to aim The characters will take time to do the same to you The idea is that all of the guns are in disrepair so they're in crap condition, making their accuracy suck

So what do you do? You go to rivet city and get the quest to get the declaration of independence, and you'll find a weapon that is miiiiiiiighty accurate, because it's compeltely untouched. It'll make combat much easier.

  • Armada   14 years 5 weeks ago

I like how the game just starts after the cutscene, "there are bad dudes approaching, kill them!" But then after you won there was like no clue on what to do. A mission complete screen would have been nice.
